University Students at QHM

Four students from Deakin, Melbourne and New England (online) Universities are currently volunteering their time and research expertise undertaking research into some very interesting topics which will enhance the museum’s research program.

Travelling from Melbourne and Geelong and by ferry from Rye, the 4 volunteer students (PhD, Masters and 4th year undergraduate) have all embraced the new research challenges.

Convenor of Research and Publications at the QHM, Diana Sawyer says: “It has been exciting discussing and choosing topics of interest with them, aiming to select something of academic worth both to each volunteer and for the benefit of the museum. They have chosen diverse topics, immersing themselves in the extensive archival material (documents, images, old film) all stored in the museum. With their digital expertise and research skills, it is opportune that Jen, Clare, Teagan and Nathan have chosen research that will also be suitable for the digital stories that the museum is working on in readiness for the new museum. Their interaction with other volunteers at the museum has been lively, and as their brief stories show, they are engaging with the wider Queenscliff community. It’s a win-win for everyone!”

I am a PhD student at Deakin University researching Aborignal and Macassan contact during the pre-colonial period in the north of Australia. At the Queenscliffe Historical Museum I am currently researching a history of the Chinese in Queenscliffe. I am compiling a collection of documents and records in order to tell the story of the Chinese in Queenscliffe including who they were, what they did and their place in the community. The documents and records I am utilising include rates records, government gazettes, newspaper articles, images, maps and other archival material gathered through the Museum and other online databases.

I am a fourth-year honours student at the University of Melbourne, majoring in art history. My thesis project is an analysis of the non-visual techniques of the twentieth-century Italian art movement, Futurism, and its relationship to the Fascist party of Italy. I have just begun my volunteer work at the museum. I am researching Arthur Streeton and his connections to Queenscliff, focusing on the paintings produced of Queenscliff during his time with the Baillieu family, as well as his personal writings and the etchings obtained and restored by the Queenscliff Gallery & Workshop, exploring how his childhood spent on the Bellarine Peninsula would come to serve as an inspiration and influence throughout his career.

I completed a Bachelor of Archaeology in 2016 and am currently completing a Master of Arts majoring in the Classical World. Studying Archaeology has allowed me to travel overseas and participate in excavating a Roman Farmhouse in the England country side. I was also a part of an

excavation of a Scottish cottage from the Gold Rush era located in a valley just outside of Ballarat, Victoria. As a volunteer researcher for the Queenscliff Historical Museum, I am currently working on a document that endeavours to incorporate as much information on the streets of Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale as possible from the museum’s collection of documents, the library resources and archives. The purpose of this document is for it to be an easily accessible resource for both researchers and members of the public alike. The museum gets quite a few enquiries about the streets, especially certain significant properties and the people connected to them. It is my hope that this document will become a great starting point for those interested.

My name is Nathan Bucud, a Deakin University Student, undertaking my final year of Bachelor of Biomedical Science degree specializing in Medical Biotechnology. As a prerequisite for my Professional Practice in Bioscience unit I am to do 80 hours of work placement at Queenscliffe Historical Museum as a Research Assistant. Per the agreement to the senior researcher at the museum, Diana Sawyer, I am to extensively research on my chosen topic which is the Bush Nursing Hospital in Queenscliffe. My research covers the history of its operation (1939-1947), prominent figures such as Sir James Barret, who had strong ties with the Bush Nursing Association, as well as similar services at the time such as the Ministering Children’s League and the Australian Red Cross. To further add to my research, I would like to see the differences of funding strategies from back then compared to now. Ultimately, what I hope to achieve, is to break down the history of the Bush Nursing Hospital at Queenscliff into digestible bites making it easier to understand its rich history.
