The Tavern
16 December 2020
Public access to the buildings in Hesse Street adjacent to the Post Office is now restricted because of wire hoarding surrounding the site on which the Hub is to be constructed. Demolition of the old Museum has started and construction of the new building is scheduled to begin mid January with the new Hub to open early 2022. In the meantime, the Museum Administration and Research will be offering limited services in the Tavern at 18 Hesse Street and visitors will need to observe the signs indicating maximum numbers who may be present in different parts of the building as they move between areas. |
A small theatre will be established early in the New Year and show heritage film with an emphasis on early days in the Borough. An interesting new video will record the flight of the Fujita, a small Japanese spy float plane housed on a submarine which surfaced off the coast. The plane flew over a large area of the coast as well as the fort in 1942.
Visitors will also be able to access an audio visual touch screen telling stories of the Borough’s history.
Displays are currently limited and should be seen as work in progress. Those still looking for Christmas presents should examine the Museum’s wide range of publications for sale and look for the new largely pictorial addition tracing the early history of the Fishermen’s Flat with stories from the Wadawurrung people and including the names of many different families who followed.
Unfortunately, monthly talks will continue to be under suspension because the Hall previously used is not taking bookings for numbers over 20. It is hoped that meetings and Monthly Talks will recommence as soon as possible early in the new year.
