Pack Up Almost Complete

17 October 2020

The current interior of the Queenscliffe Historical Museum (QHM) has to be seen to be believed.

Visitors who have memories of the orderly and informative displays they were accustomed to seeing when they were able to access the building would not believe their eyes. They would be confronted by a cavernous open space holding the few items not already packed and transferred to temporary accommodation in readiness for the demolition of the building which has held its collections for over 50 years.

The Museum volunteers have done a marvellous job of safely moving our precious collection to three locations. The more fragile and irreplaceable ‘documents’ have been moved to the Queenscliffe Maritime Museum’s Place of Deposit (POD). This room at the QMM has been specially designed to house such documents and we are grateful to them for their generous offer to share this space for the duration of the HUB build.

Less sensitive material (the bulk of the QHM collection) has found a temporary home in another storage location. Again, we are grateful for generously recognizing our predicament and making this wonderful facility available.

Most of the remaining assets of the Museum will be transferred down Hesse Street to the Tavern. There, QHM will be joined by the Library and Visitor Information Centre. Once at home in The Tavern and Covid-19 restrictions permitting, the Museum intends to offer a modified range of services which will include some displays, local history research facilities and advice, and screening some of the popular old movies showing early life in the Borough.
