The course uses the resources of the Queenscliffe Historical Museum, including documents, photographs and articles. Most sessions will be held at Museum, and when possible and appropriate the sessions will include walks within the town and a visit to the Maritime Museum. |

The fee for the course is $50. There is also a fee for entry to the Maritime Museum ($5, members of the Maritime Museum free) payable at that Museum on the day of the visit.

2018 Course Outline:Session 1
April 19 Introduction Course outline, scope, limitations. Sources of Borough history. Aborigines. First arrivals. (Walk from Museum to Ocean View) Session 2 April 26 Grand Hotels Leihy, Casey, McPherson, Adamson, Admans, Watmough, Sheehan, Scorer, Baillieu, Nugent & Gosling, Klug and others built and operated the Hotels of Queenscliff. The session deals with the evolution of hotel keeping and the associated buildings. This session will include a guided tour of the Historical Museum to explore the resources available. Session 3 May 3 Streets and Buildings Buildings in the Borough provide insight into social development and life style from about 1838. The session will examine early maps. (Walk streets near the Museum?) Session 4 May 10 Our Maritime History This session will be held at the Maritime Museum, and will look at the maritime connections of the Borough: the pilots, lighthouses and fisher folk. (Session at the Maritime museum, participants pay entry!) Session 5 May 17 The Guesthouses At its height the Borough boasted 49 ‘guesthouses,’ in all there were many more than one hundred. The organisation and culture of the guesthouses will be considered. (Walk round past some guest houses?) Session 6 May 24 Education and Welfare History of Queenscliffe schools, the Cottage by the Sea, Ballarat Orphanage and Santa Casa will be described. (Walk around the “education precinct”) Session 7 May 31 Entertainment Movies show both how the Borough lived and entertained itself on special occasions and how the place looked. In this session it is hoped preserved films will be shown. Specific topics will be discussed notably the Scooter Races and the search for Benito’s Treasure. (Ron Hodgetts on movies, sample films?) History of the Baths? Session 8 June 7 Point Lonsdale The lighthouse and holidays were key elements in the development of Point Lonsdale, after its initial farming focus. (Cemetery Walk?) |
